BACKGROUND

Ukhasi Construction was appointed by Assmang Manganese for the Civil works for the construction of Slag Hauler road adjacent to the New Baghouse Area at Assmang Cato Ridge Works.

DESCRIPTION

The works consisted of the following activities

  • Designing of the road
  • Roadway construction carriageway pavement curb shoulder sidewalks/footpath
  • Carriageway
  • Layers of carriageway earth work granular sub base (gsb) wet mix macadam (wmm) bituminous macadam (bm) bituminous concrete (bc) tack coat
  • Earth work soil filling spreading & levelling compaction
  • Compaction of subgrade 1 layer: 200mm ii, iii layer: 150 mm
  • Granular sub base material layers depth compaction
  • Sub base layer
  • It is a road base material consisting of crushed rock/slag usually premixed with controlled amount of water sufficient for adequate compaction.
  • Finishing of surface (rolling)
  • Aggregate course aggregate the course aggregate consists of crushed rock, crushed gravel or other gravel or other hard material retained on 2.36mm sieve
  • Fine aggregate fine aggregate consist of crushed or naturally occurring material or their combination passing 2.36 mm sieve and retained on 75 micron sieve
  • Bituminous concrete material mixing spreading
  • Camber a slight downward curve from the middle to the sides of a surface (such as a road) percentage camber -2% purpose of camber
  • Kerb a line of stone or concrete forming an edge between a pavement and a roadway, so that a pavement is some 15 cm above the level of the road kerb
